ALOCASIA ‘MARTIN CAHUZAC’

Alocasia longiloba ‘Korthalsii’ x Alocasia ‘Pucciana’

PARENTAGE: Alocasia longiloba ‘Korthalsii’ x Alocasia ‘Pucciana’ (listed in the original protologue as a hybrid of Alocasia ‘Thibauti’ x Alocasia ‘Pucciana’)

SYNONYMS: Alocasia ‘Madame Martin Cahuzac’

HYBRIDIZER: Chantrier Brothers in Mortefontaine, France

DESCRIPTION: “Big leaves having a metallic sheen veined with silver”.

“The introduction of this plant genus is so universally recognized that we are not going to dwell on it here, but rather to emphasize it. Every gardener knows the beautiful leaf forms and colorings of different species and has recently added a number of artificially produced hybrids to them. Such a hybrid is also the above-mentioned new variety, which is the result of a cross of Aloc. Thibauti × A. Pucciana, (parents acquired from Mr. Chantrier in Mortefontaine). It differs from the other species by a flesh-colored, matte-purple stem, which is irregularly waved, the dark zones marking it, especially at the tip. The blade measures 55 centimeters in length, 30 centimeters in width; the top side is dark green, the middle part of the leaf and the main veins are elevated and show off-white veins from, giving a still richer appearance, which is the more enhanced by the edges being bright pink."

This hybrid is not known to exist in collections anymore, or if it does, it's likely considered one of the many members of the Alocasia longiloba complex

Alocasia ‘Martin-Cahuzac’ was named after Jean-Raymond-Hippolyte Martin-Cahuzac (1847-1910), proprietor of the vineyard of Sybirol (Floirac, Département de la Gironde, France), president of the ‘Société horticole et viticole de la Gironde’ and well-known orchid collector.

Some sources also name this hybrid Alocasia ‘Madame Martin Cahuzac’ or ‘M. Masrtin Cahuzac’ so it may be possible it was named after his wife.
